In December, the door to my cell opened and the guard tossed on a crumpled piece of paper. I moved as best I could to pick up the paper. It said simply ‘Constantino, do not be discouraged; we know you are alive. ’It was signed ‘Monica’ and had the Amnesty International logo on it.

Those words saved my life and sanity. Eight months later I was set free.

Last month, I had an important English exam. I decided not to put off studying (as I normally do1) and got  up early morning to get down to work straight away.

I’m a ‘morning person’ and I got a lot out of my television sessions. I always began by going over a practice test I had done-checking my answers and finding out what things I’d got wrong. I also tried to work out why I’d made mistakes. If I didn’t understand something. I’d write it down and then bring it up in class with my teacher. She was very helpful and she went through all of the things that would probably come up in the exam.

In the end, the exam wasn’t so bad after all and I think I got through it. I still haven’t had my result yet.

Once I sat  on the beach at night to appreciate the beauty. I was alone on the beach as it was close to midnight. Even the courting couples who sat there whispering sweet nothings were gone. I sat on the beach and faced the sea. It was calm and the waves were gentle. The moon was crescent and lay over the ocean like a luminous boat. It shone over the sea and in the distance I could  see    alone fisherman. He was standing on his boat and rowing slowly towards me. The night sky was filled with stars and water below appeared black like the sky. In fact in some places, it seemed the sky touched the sea or rather as if they were one.

Undisturbed, I watched the sea as the waves made gentle laps against the beach. I got up and walked along the sea to observe. As I walked along the beach I could hear tiny feet scurrying away, and I knew they were little crabs. I felt a little regretful for intruding into their domain and whispered and apology. I looked into the water and saw little lashes of light and knew them to be tiny luminous creatures reflecting the moonlight.

Looking at the land I saw coconut palms as they stood majestically against the beach. As I watched I heard a sudden ‘thud’ which startled me. I smiled in the darkness, a I saw it stop an inch from the water and then a gentle wave came and led it away. I looked at the coconut floating away and wondered where it would land and grow into a tree. “You must be proud of him.” I whispered to the tree to Mother Nature.
